Buying Fireplace Accessories

A fireplace can and should be more than just a source of warmth for your home. As a centerpiece of your house, it should be visually arresting and set the tone for the rest of your decor. In order to achieve the best look for you, you need to purchase the right fireplace accessories. Many accessories are also needed for safety.

Which accessories you get depends partly on the type of fireplace you have. Is it a traditional brick fireplace with real fire from burning logs? Or is it a gas or an electric fireplace? Or perhaps you may have a traditional one which you wish to convert to the gas or electric type for greater ease of use or because of environmental or health concerns.

If you use a gas fireplace, gas logs are important fireplace accessories. While they don’t make crackling sounds and of course the smell of real logs burning is absent, some will produce yellow flames like the real thing. You need to decide whether you want the vented or the unvented style. The vented ones are safer because gas poisoning is less of a risk, and they always produce yellow flames while the unvented ones may produce less attractive blue flames, but because some of the heat is released through the vent they aren’t as energy efficient as the unvented logs.

For electric fireplaces, in which there are no actual flames being produced, you can get logs made out of real wood that will crackle as with a traditional fireplace. You can also have the effect of real flames. While the latest models can be surprisingly realistic, try to look at a clear video of the logs to see just how real they look and sound. A remote control is also a useful accessory for either electric or gas fireplaces.

For a traditional fireplace, fireplace accessories include a fireplace screen, log holders, and fireplace tools such as brooms, pokers, tongs and shovels. While a screen is mostly for safety, there are many styles that have an elegant look to them. Tools can be purchased as a set and displayed on an attractive holder.

Whatever type of fireplace you have, fireplace mantels are the accessories that are the most important for your decor. These can be made of stone, wood, or even metal. Of all your fireplace accessories, take the most time and care in researching this one. The best place to search is online, where there are hundreds of websites. Focus on the ones that have a lot of pictures or videos, and read a lot of customer reviews. Try using the search term “fireplace accessories online” to get ideas about how to furnish your next fireplace.

The Various Fireplace Accessories For Your Home

If your home has a fireplace then you have probably shopped for some fireplace accessories to use with it. The various kinds of items you can use in conjunction with a fireplace can be functional or decorative. Most fireplaces have some type of screen or protective element in front of it. This can also be fireplace doors which might be constructed of glass. The doors made of glass can come as plain styles or with decorative etchings on them. These are generally used with units that are built-in to a home when it is constructed.

Fireplace mantels are also items which are generally built-in when the fireplace is installed in the home. A mantel is the top portion above a fireplace which usually has a broad shelf like area. The design for a mantel can be one which is made of wood or stone. Wood is a common material for the mantel and it is often used to place decorative centerpiece items on as a focal point for the room. A stone mantel may not protrude as far out from the base wall as a wood one and is often left unadorned.

In the line of fireplace accessories you will find several styles of fireplace tools to choose from. The tools come as a set which is placed on one side of your fireplace unit. The set will contain a brush, shovel, poker and tongs. These are all items used in placing logs and cleaning the area. You will also find several types of log holders or baskets you might use. These items are generally placed on the opposite side of the tools. All of the fireplace accessories are available in the popular black cast iron material as well as a few other styles such as brass or wood.

If the home you live in does not have a built-in fireplace you can still get the beauty and heat of having a traditional unit by purchasing one of several types of electric fireplaces. These items come as free standing units which can be placed against a wall or set in the middle of the room, depending on the design. The come with the same styles and features as the built-in items, but are more cost efficient and easy to use. They are available in different sizes ranging from an 18 inch unit to a large 33 inch one. A well designed fireplace will provide an attractive addition to any room it is in.
